Maryellen Stephens
Board-certified Nurse Practitioner
Maryellen Stephens’ journey into mental health care began with a foundational curiosity about the living world, earning a degree in biology before discovering her true calling in nursing. Driven by a desire to blend scientific knowledge with deep patient advocacy, she excelled academically, graduating magna cum laude and consistently earning a spot on the Dean’s List. Her thirst for growth led her to explore nursing education before ultimately pivoting toward advanced clinical practice. This shift allowed her to synthesize her diverse academic roots into a singular, focused mission: becoming a Psychiatric Practitioner, equipped to treat patients across the lifespan.
The early chapters of Maryellen's nurse practitioner career were defined by versatility and a commitment to meeting communities where they needed care most. Navigating both traditional behavioral health clinics and integrated primary care models, she honed her skills in psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, and medication management for adult populations. During this formative period, she also stepped into the sensitive realm of pediatric foster care. This early exposure to both adult and pediatric psychiatry laid the groundwork for a deeply holistic philosophy, proving her ability to seamlessly adapt her clinical approach to the unique vulnerabilities of different age groups.
Maryellen’s practice truly deepened during her time providing intensive, wrap-around services for at-risk youth and families navigating immense systemic and personal trauma. Immersed in school-based mental health programs and specialized classroom settings for children with severe emotional disturbances, she became a fierce advocate for trauma-informed care. Working within multidisciplinary teams to support youth facing foster care placement or the juvenile justice system, she looked beyond mere symptom management. Instead, Maryellen focused on supportive therapy and comprehensive education for parents, children, and staff alike, recognizing that true healing requires a stable, informed support system.
Since joining the Sharmat Psychiatric Group in 2021, Maryellen has woven these rich threads of experience into the very fabric of our practice. Her professional identity is uniquely shaped by her active memberships in holistic, psychiatric, and professional development nursing associations, ensuring her care remains as forward-thinking as it is compassionate. Maryellen continues to champion a patient-centered approach that honors each individual’s unique story, combining clinical excellence with the profound empathy that has defined her entire career.
